Not just a romantic film Cold Mountain this year but also was asked as best film. A film director who is also a writer Anthony Minghella, who had previously instituted an Oscar-winning film THE ENGLISH PATIENT.
Minghella brings a novel by Charles Frazier who said that union loyalty and fear that was never fixed, it could end up at the beginning and at the end. COLD MOUNTAIN background traveling in the Civil War era, a returned soldier who met his girlfriend, who has faithfully waited for him for years. Could be akin to the classic tale of Odysseus, Homer's Penelope, Inman (Jude Law) and Ada (Nicole Kidman) faces a difficult obstacle to overcome, which marked the dangers and temptations.
The film opens with a battle of Petersburg in Virginia, a figure that takes us in a riot bathed in blood, mud and the stench of death. Inman was seriously injured when sent to a hospital along with the arrival of a letter from anybody begs him to come back to him, "If you fight stop fighting, if you're marching, stop marching. Back to me."
Toddles Inman leaves the hospital to walk hundreds of miles to a destination, a small town of Cold Mountain, North Carolina. An odyssey is not easy to acted, the shadow Home Guard (the guards are famous with its brutality and ready to shoot down the soldier-deserter who fled from service) is always ready to lurk all the time, did not even hesitate to shoot them dead.
Everything was running smoothly, call it Ada, who is the daughter of a widower (Donald Sutherland) to caring for his father after the death of his mother, not a woman 19an century. There are indeed speak fluent French, play piano, but did not know how to cook an egg, even too sorry for hurting the rooster. Up came the Ruby (ReneŽ Zellweger), a mountain woman who was used to slaughter a chicken, to teach There's how to survive in the real world, and vice versa There Ruby taught about literature and poetry.
Meanwhile, on the way to Cold Mountain, Inman meets a priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a cunning young forest (Giovanni Ribisi) and three male teaser. But of all these encounters, one thing I can not forget is when he's Inman met a beautiful young widow (Natalie Portman), who may not ever know her and her baby would survive the war, or perhaps until next spring.
Not a classic tale about the Civil War was David O. Selznick. Even Tara and Twelve Oaks has no affiliation with the rigors of the Blue Ridge mountains. But one thing we ought to look at, while the expressions of war and the nomads of the mountain began to scream like GONE WITH THE WIND, and obstinate, stubborn, racist aristocrat.
The men in Cold Mountain may be more common with Ratso Rizzo than Ashley Wilkes. One thing they never met on the way was a slave, but for them the war was a pride, a way in which the Yankees could not govern the South. Masculinity and the male side they began to emerge as one character says, "They were sent into battle only with 'a flag and a lie.'
Minghella wrote the screenplay script itself although it is still stuck with the original novel, not a casual event, but rather has a rhythm, a combination of romantic love story, a wild odyssey, a reflection of fear and cruelty of war, blended together to form an extraordinary tale dramatic. Missed only one thing on paper Minghella Frazier is the lack of depiction of the beautiful hills, rocks, rivers and majestic mountains. John Seale's claim but the cinematography makes the film feel more deeply, the charm of its natural beauty up depicted in this film.
Portman and Eileen Atkins offers a stunning acting even though they only appeared for five minutes, but their presence is enough to give meaning to their looks sharp, pungent, poignant and sad.
Hoffman's appearance as a follower of God and the presence of Annie Oakley gave a little comic picture that accompanied the rough tenderness Law and Kidman are presented in a love story that sharp. Acting was presented three major star Law, Kidman and Zellweger successfully encourage them to reach the Golden Globe nominations, maybe even an Oscar nomination will not miss them.
Like the story of his epic trilogy Peter Jackson's THE LORD OF THE RINGS, Cold Mountain is a film adaptation of novel high berintelijensi promoted to the big screen ever made. As well as devotion and struggle heroes in this story, this film is really a true travel story.
